Film Format

“Socks” was originally intended to be a live-action film. However – candidly – I suck at fundraising and begging people for money. I had just barely enough personal money saved to produce the film as I envisioned, and I would have had no money left over to pay actors, to hire professionals in key production and post-production roles, to market, or to distribute.

Reluctantly, I made the decision to proceed with an animated film. It will take longer to produce, but cost considerably less. It will be released as a proof-of-concept, and if we’re lucky, someday someone with deeper pockets will come along and want to produce the film properly.

Production Timeline

Pre-Production: The script will be undergoing some final touch-ups to sync it with the fully-edited and now-published novel adaptation. Once that is done, the script will be shared with voice actors and their participation will be confirmed. That’s it. Since the film is animated, we won’t have to scout locations, fit for costumes, gather props, or break down a filming schedule. Accordingly, I expect the cast to be fully announced by Spring 2027, and film posters will be released shortly thereafter.

Production: Voice recording can begin immediately as cast members are confirmed. Barring any casting problems, this part should easily be done by spring 2027. Then we move on to the tedious task of animation, and I expect that to take most of the rest of the year. I expect a trailer will be ready for release by late 2027 or early 2028.

Post-Production: Syncing up the audio (including music and foley) with the animation will certainly be done simultaneously while animating the film. Therefore, I expect a short editing process where we’re primarily working on opening and closing credits, subtitles (the film will be made available in English, Spanish, and French), and assembling the DCP. I expect the film to be completed in Spring 2028.

Film Festival Circuit: I’m aiming to enter the circuit at a particular point in the calendar as a strategy to minimize premiere status conflicts. Our earliest submissions should begin in May 2028 and proceed until July 2029. We should know the last of the results by October 2029.

Release: If all goes according to plan, the film will be released to the public in October 2029.
